Painting and wallpaper in Woodstock, IL

Woodstock has one of the genuinely distinctive downtowns in the region, and the housing near the Square reflects it. Older homes, real wood, and details worth keeping.

We have painted exteriors in Woodstock and there is a real photo of one further down this page. That is a real job in this town, not a stock image with a town name typed under it.

The part that actually matters

What we see in Woodstock homes

When the houses here were built decides what fails, how long prep takes, and what a job costs. This is Woodstock specifically, not a generic service area paragraph.

The older neighborhoods around the Square hold late-1800s and early-1900s homes: wood siding, porches, decorative trim, tall windows with original sash. Prep on those houses is the majority of the labor and lead-safe practice applies to anything pre-1978.

What is specific to Woodstock is how much of the character sits on the porch. Porch ceilings, columns, railings, spindles and steps take hand work and they are the first thing to fail because they take weather from below as well as above.

Interiors in the older stock mean plaster rather than drywall. Plaster patches differently, it telegraphs a bad repair under a flat sheen, and it is worth doing right before any color goes on. That is a scope difference that a subdivision-focused painter will miss.

On the newer edges of town the work looks like our Gilberts and Pingree Grove jobs: vinyl exteriors, drywall inside, first or second repaints, and interior color changes rather than restoration.

This housing stock description is informed but not yet confirmed by David, who has worked Woodstock for 20 years. It is on his review list.

Questions

Woodstock questions we get

My walls are plaster, not drywall. Does that change anything?

It changes the repair work. Plaster cracks and patches differently and a bad patch shows through a flat sheen. We handle the plaster before we talk color.

The porch is in worse shape than the rest of the house. Can you do just that?

Yes. Porch-only work is a real scope and it is common here, since the porch takes weather from above and below.

Have you actually worked in Woodstock?

Yes. There is a photo of a finished Woodstock exterior on this page, taken on our own job.
