Painting and wallpaper in Barrington, IL

Barrington is the town where the prep is the job. Larger homes, deeper lots, and a lot of real wood on the outside of the house.

If you are getting quotes here and one of them came back low and fast, look at what it says about scraping, priming and carpentry repair. That is where the difference lives.

The part that actually matters

What we see in Barrington homes

When the houses here were built decides what fails, how long prep takes, and what a job costs. This is Barrington specifically, not a generic service area paragraph.

Barrington and the surrounding Barrington Hills area hold a lot of older, larger homes, including estate properties on multi-acre lots. That means cedar siding, wood trim, wood soffits and fascia, and genuine wood windows with glazing putty rather than vinyl replacements.

Wood fails differently than vinyl. It cups, it splits at the end grain, the paint fails first on the south and west elevations, and the failure usually starts at a joint or a nail head. So a Barrington exterior is scrape, sand, spot prime, caulk, re-glaze where needed, sometimes replace a section of trim, and then paint. The painting is the last and shortest part.

Any home built before 1978 can have lead-based paint under the newer coats, and that changes how the work is done: containment, controlled sanding, cleanup that is verified rather than assumed. We follow lead-safe practice on those homes and we tell you when we are doing it and why.

Interior expectations here run higher than average. Detailed millwork, tall trim, coffered and tray ceilings, stained woodwork that some owners want kept and others want painted. Those are two very different jobs and the estimate should say plainly which one you are buying.

Job mix

The jobs we get called for most in Barrington

Exterior wood restoration and repaint

Cedar siding and wood trim with real prep behind it. Scrape, sand, spot prime, repair, then coat. Lead-safe practice on the pre-1978 homes.

Window sashes and glazing

Wood windows that have not been painted in a decade or more. This is the slowest, most detailed exterior work we do anywhere in our service area.

Detailed interior millwork

Tall trim, wainscot, built-ins, and stained woodwork that is being converted to painted. Fine finish work where the tolerances are tight.

Questions

Barrington questions we get

Do you follow lead-safe practices on older Barrington homes?

Yes. On pre-1978 homes we assume lead is present until proven otherwise and work accordingly, with containment and controlled cleanup rather than open sanding.

Why is a Barrington exterior quote higher than the same size house in a newer subdivision?

Because the house is not the same. Wood needs scraping, sanding, spot priming and often carpentry repair before a brush ever touches it. Vinyl-sided homes skip most of that.

Can you keep some woodwork stained and paint the rest?

Yes, and it is a common request here. We will show you the transition points before we start so there are no surprises about where stained stops and painted begins.
