What goes wrong on our own jobs, and what we do about it

August 5, 2026 · 6 min read

Things go wrong on our jobs sometimes. Color regret after a wall is painted, a missed touch-up spot, dust from cabinet sanding getting into a room it should not have, a schedule slip because of weather, or a drip we did not catch until after we left. What matters is what happens next: our lifetime workmanship warranty and free touch-ups for one year mean we come back and fix it.

The short version

  • Color regret, missed spots, sanding dust, and weather delays are real things that happen.
  • We would rather tell you plainly than pretend every job goes perfectly.
  • Our lifetime workmanship warranty and one year of free touch-ups cover exactly this.
  • If something is wrong, call David directly and it gets scheduled to be fixed.

Color regret is more common than people admit

A color that looked right on a small swatch or even a sample board sometimes reads differently once it covers four walls in a two story great room with big windows and shifting daylight, which is a common layout in newer Huntley and Algonquin homes. Homeowners sometimes call us a week after a job is done and say the color feels darker or cooler than they expected.

We would rather hear that from you directly than have you live with a room you do not like. We will talk through options, and if a repaint in a different color is the right call, we will price that plainly rather than act like nothing can be done.

A touch-up spot gets missed

On a big job with a lot of trim, ceilings, and multiple rooms, it happens that a small spot gets missed, a nail hole that did not get filled, a scuff on baseboard near a doorway, a thin spot on a wall where the light catches it differently than it did on walkthrough day. Our crews do a walkthrough with you before we leave specifically to catch this, but sometimes something only shows up once furniture is back in place or the light changes with the season.

That is exactly what the free touch-ups for one year is for. Call it in, no charge, no argument.

Dust from cabinet sanding travels further than expected

Cabinet refinishing involves sanding, and even with containment, dust can find its way into an adjacent room, especially in open concept kitchens that flow into a great room, which is common in the subdivisions we work in most. We do our best to seal off the work area, but if dust settles somewhere it should not have, tell us and we will come back and clean it, not just apologize for it.

Weather pushes the schedule, especially on exterior jobs

Illinois weather does not always cooperate with a painting schedule. Rain, high humidity, or a cold snap outside the temperature and dew point range we need for exterior paint to cure properly can push a start date or stretch a job out over more days than planned. We would rather delay a day or two than paint into conditions that will cause the job to fail later.

We will call you when this happens instead of leaving you to wonder why the crew did not show up.

A drip or run gets found after we leave

Occasionally a drip on trim, a run on a door edge, or a spot near a corner gets missed during the final walkthrough and only shows up later once the light hits it right. This is a small thing to fix and an easy one to get annoyed about if you feel like you have to fight to get it handled.

You will not have to fight for it. That is what the lifetime workmanship warranty is for. Reach out to David directly, describe what you are seeing, and we will get it on the schedule to fix. We built the warranty and the free touch-up year because we know these things happen even on a job we are proud of, and we would rather stand behind the work than pretend it never needs it.

Why a cheap painting quote is usually cheap for a reason

A low bid can be the right call sometimes, but usually it means thin coats, skipped prep, or no insurance behind the work.
