Refinishing versus replacing kitchen cabinets

Refinishing makes sense when your cabinet boxes and layout are sound and you just want a new look. Full replacement makes sense when you want a different layout, need more storage, or the boxes themselves are damaged or falling apart. It is a different trade with a different scope, not just a bigger version of refinishing.

How the pricing actually works
Cabinet refinishing is priced by counting your doors, drawers, faces, handles and hinges, then adding the materials base, then pricing the labor and finish across that count. It is not a flat per-kitchen number because a kitchen with 20 doors and drawers costs differently than one with 40, and a two-tone finish or glazed look adds labor over a single flat color.
Replacement is a completely different estimate built by a cabinet installer, not a painting contractor. It includes new boxes, new hardware, possibly new countertops if the dimensions change, and often plumbing or electrical work if the layout shifts. We do not price replacement work because it is not our trade. If you are getting quotes for both, expect the numbers to come from two different types of contractors and to not be directly comparable.
What condition are your boxes really in
This is the single biggest factor in which direction makes sense. If the boxes are solid wood or good quality plywood, sit square, and the doors are not warped or delaminating, refinishing gives you a real transformation for a fraction of what new cabinets cost. Water damage at the sink base, swollen particleboard, or doors that no longer hang straight are signs the boxes themselves have a problem, and paint will not fix a structural issue.

Do you actually want a new layout
Refinishing keeps your current layout exactly as it is. If you are happy with where your cabinets are, how much storage you have, and the general footprint of your kitchen, refinishing lets you change the entire look without touching any of that.
If what you actually want is more storage, a different island, deeper drawers instead of shelves, or a different traffic flow, that is a layout change, and no amount of refinishing solves it. That is a replacement or a remodel conversation, not a painting one.
Timeline and how much your kitchen gets disrupted
Cabinet refinishing generally runs a matter of days. Your kitchen is out of commission for the finishing work, doors and drawers come off and go through the process, but the disruption has a clear, short end date.
A full cabinet replacement is measured in weeks, sometimes longer once you factor in ordering lead times, demolition, installation, and any countertop or plumbing coordination. If you cannot be without a kitchen for an extended stretch, that alone can make refinishing the more livable choice even if budget were not a factor.
How do you test refinishing before committing your whole kitchen
We usually finish a sample door, or a spare drawer front if you have one, in the actual color and sheen you are considering, so you can see it under your own kitchen lighting for a few days before we commit to the whole job. Cabinet photos and paint chips look different under a kitchen's mix of daylight and overhead light than they do on a screen or a store sample board.
This step also lets you feel the finish, not just see it. A satin or matte cabinet finish feels different under your hand than a semi gloss one, and that matters on doors you touch every day.
What we see going wrong in real Huntley area kitchens
The most common problem we run into on older homes in this area is swollen particleboard under the sink, usually from a slow leak nobody noticed for years. That box needs to be repaired or replaced before any finish goes on it, and no amount of paint fixes wood that has already delaminated.
The second most common issue is hinges and hardware that were never adjusted as the house settled, so doors hang slightly crooked. Refinishing is a good time to catch and correct that, since the doors are already off, but it is a hardware and carpentry fix, not a paint fix, and we call it out separately so you know what you are paying for.
The honest bottom line
If your boxes are sound and you like your layout, refinishing gets you a dramatically different looking kitchen without the mess, the timeline, or the layout risk of a full replacement. If your boxes are failing or your layout genuinely does not work for you, no finish is going to fix that and you should be talking to a cabinet installer or kitchen remodeler instead.
When a homeowner is on the fence, we tell them to think about resale timeline and how the boxes feel, not just look. Solid boxes with dated color are refinishing. Soft, sagging, or water damaged boxes are a replacement conversation, no matter how good a fresh coat of paint might look for the first few months.
